Chiang Mai Mist Season — Which Month Actually Delivers

Chiang Mai Mist Season — Which Month Actually Delivers

Everyone wants the sea-of-mist photograph, but not every month provides one. Here is what three years of running this trip taught us about when to book.

The question we field most often each year is which month to visit Chiang Mai for the sea of mist. The short answer is mid-November to early February. The longer answer contains the details that decide whether the trip is worth it.

Mist forms from the temperature gap between night and pre-dawn, combined with humidity. A cold night following a day of rain produces the thickest mist — which is why the tail end of the rains, in November, often beats the dry heart of winter.

When we recommend

If you can only book once, take the last week of November through mid-December. Cold enough for mist, and still before mountain lodges fill up and double their rates over New Year.

January is genuinely the coldest month, but in a dry year the mist thins noticeably. We once took a group up on three consecutive mornings and got mist on exactly one.

What to bring

A real winter coat, not a light jacket. At 5am the mountains drop into single digits, and you leave the lodge in the dark to wait an hour at the viewpoint before the sky lightens.

Finally, hold it loosely. Nature guarantees nothing. A good trip is one that still feels worth it on the morning the mist does not come.
