Notes from Kanchanaburi, where half the group worried about the lack of signal and nobody wanted to leave.
Before departure, one question dominated the group chat: is there signal? The answer is almost none, and we say so plainly in the trip description.
Day one is the hard one. Hands reach for phones automatically every ten minutes, then put them down. There is nothing to look at.
Day two
By the second morning the mood had visibly changed. People talked more. Someone swam before breakfast. Someone else finished an entire book on the raft and said she had not done that in three years.
In the afternoon we kayaked along the cliffs. Not far — out and back, about two hours.
What came home with us
On the drive back, someone asked whether the next trip could also go somewhere without signal. It was the person who had asked about signal most insistently beforehand.
We are not arguing that everyone should disconnect. Only that those three days did more for people than we expected when we designed the trip.
